If you were to ask many aspiring founders about the current weaknesses of their startups, they would tell you about many things, like business skills, team management, marketing, and much more. Almost no one would touch on the weakness of their idea. It is perfect by default.
But could the lack of some side skills or marketing be the real weaknesses? Not at all. If you can fix it with money, it is just another expense. You can perfect all of this along the way.
The single real weakness of any startup is its core idea. The team, marketing, and other details revolve around the core idea. But a weak core idea can lead to a weak team and a lack of funds.
The point is that if a startup wants to skyrocket, its core idea should be its single weakest point. The core idea is actually a significant hypothesis about consumer behaviour, trends, and technology.
At the beginning, no one can possibly know whether or not it will be a success. The mission is to test it. If a startup is right, the next "Facebook" might be born. If not, find another hypothesis (pivot) and start again.
When your core idea is not a significant hypothesis and there are no doubts or concerns about the idea from day one, it is likely that you are about to build another "corner shop" in the already saturated market.
No one among business angels and VCs are interested in another "corner shop." It is simply because you can gain “X100” returns only when you were right when others thought your idea was silly.
So, if you think your (future) startup is truly disruptive, now you know your single weak point. Work hard on it. The rest is just expenses.
